Call for journalists to report on Road Safety

ENHANCING ROAD SAFETY REPORTING FOR AFRICAN JOURNALISTS

Africa holds the grim distinction of having the highest road traffic fatality rate in the world, with over 800 people losing their lives in road crashes daily. More than half of these victims are vulnerable road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. This public health crisis, however, is entirely preventable and represents a critical story that needs to be told.

In response to this, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Science Africa will host a three-day training workshop for journalists in Nairobi, Kenya, from July 16-18, 2024. The objective is to equip journalists with the skills needed to report on key road safety issues and to train others in this important field. The workshop will also feature the official launch of the WHO Africa Regional Report on Road Safety.

Applications are invited from journalists and media trainers in KenyaGhanaUgandaEthiopia, and Tanzania. Following the training, participants will have the opportunity to apply for grants to support their reporting or training efforts on road safety, with mentoring provided by the Science Africa team.
